UltraContext uses ~/.ultracontext/config.json as the runtime single source of truth. The daemon, TUI, and MCP Server read from it during normal operation.
Run ultracontext config to create this file interactively.

Config file

bash
Created automatically by the setup wizard (ultracontext config) or on first daemon start. Override the path with ULTRACONTEXT_CONFIG_FILE.
JSON

Capture preferences

The onboarding wizard (ultracontext config) writes these keys. Edit the file directly to adjust them later — the daemon hot-reloads on changes.

Who reads this

Setup wizard

bash
The wizard prompts for API key and bootstrap mode, then writes the config file.

Environment variables

Environment variables override values from ~/.ultracontext/config.json.

Precedence

Resolution order for runtime values:
  1. Environment variables
  2. ~/.ultracontext/config.json
  3. Built-in defaults

Dotenv

When running from source, daemon and TUI load environment variables from .env files in this order:
  1. Monorepo root .env
  2. apps/daemon/.env or apps/tui/.env
  3. Custom path via DOTENV_CONFIG_PATH
When installed globally via npm install -g ultracontext, use ~/.ultracontext/config.json for API key and bootstrap mode. Environment variables still work for all other settings.
